OPENLY ANNOUNCES 1CATE OPENURL LINK SERVER PROJECT

OpenURL enables seamless integration of resources from multiple providers

San Francisco, California - June 16, 2001 - Openly Informatics, Inc. (http://nj.oclc.org/) today announced the 1cate link server project. 1cate, short for 1-click access to everything, will provide the information industry with a focal point for open-source development of link-server software. 1cate started as framework for customizing data from jake (jake-db.org), but users wanted to blend in more and more data from other sources, including e-journal data specific to their libraries.

Openly is contributing its OpenURL link-server software to the project, and will support libraries wishing to install and customize the link server software. Openly will also adapt its Link.Openly link calculation software to work with 1cate link servers.

OpenURL is a standard being developed by the National Information Standards Organization, NISO. OpenURL will codify a vocabulary for putting bibliographic metadata into an internet hyperlink. Numerous information providers are committed to support OpenURL in their products; together with a link-server running at the library, OpenURL enables seamless integration of resources from multiple providers.

"We struggled for a while to think of a name that would explain what the point of a link-server was." said Eric Hellman, President of Openly Informatics. "After all, users can click through a static journal holdings web site to get to a full text resource, and then do a search to find what their looking for. And then it came to us- the goal of having a link server is to eliminate all those clicks, because users don't want to click, they want 1 click access to everything !"
